TalkTalk Rejects uSwitch Survey Findings

Filed under: Buyers + Consumers, Cell Phones, Technometer — admin @ 10:28 am

A recent survey by uSwitch showed up some serious flaws in the technical support offered by broadband operators in the UK. Top providers like Orange and Tiscali were found to have many dissatisfied customers, according to the report.

The uSwitch report showed that only 55% customers are happy with their provider’s tech support. Orange and Tiscali rate very poorly as far as these factors are concerned. While network connection problems are the most frequent issues that crop up, only about 40% of these are resolved in one go. More than half the issues need more than one call before they are fully sorted out.

TalkTalk customers were shown to be the hardest hit, with an average wait of 12 minutes before they are put through to technical support executives. Nearly 2000 calls are made for technical support in each hour in the UK, the survey revealed. Millions of pounds are spent each year on such calls. On an average, a technical support call lasts 17 minutes, out of which 6 minutes are spent on hold, the report claimed.

TalkTalk, the British ISP, has rejected the findings of this report entirely. They have come up with statistics gleaned form actual calls to show that on an average, a TalkTalk customer spends just 53 seconds on hold during a tech assistance call. They remarked that the uSwitch survey has derived its conclusions based on obsolete data. As a result, its findings are in no way relevant to today’s scenario - click for latest broadband reviews.

The ISP further pointed out that the survey had asked people to give their average time on hold, and that there were no specifics asked for or collected. Any conclusions based on such generalised data cannot be scientific, the ISP claimed.

Counting Pages on the World Wide Web

Filed under: Technometer, Universe Of Nets, Web Of Websters — admin @ 8:20 pm

How large is the World Wide Web? Is it 60 billion pages? 100 billion pages? 1 trillion pages? No one really knows for sure and the reason we don’t know is simple. People keep creating new pages.

In the time it takes you to read this sentence, several thousand to maybe 100,000 new pages of Web content have just been created across the World Wide Web. Isn’t that amazing? And yet we will never know where they all are. Those pages include Tweets on Twitter, forum posts, spam pages, blog posts, and other pages.

You have to ask yourself what is a Web page? Is it just anything that is formatted in HTML? For example, is this page any less a real Web page than this page? What is the real difference between the two of them?

Some pages are static. They will never change or only vary rarely. Some pages are dynamic. They will change often or constantly. But if you put a little date function on a page and that is all that changes on the page, is the page static or dynamic? Where do you draw the line?

When you look at pages like this you are probably just looking at the very top of the iceberg. After all the links on those pages have to lead to other pages, and those pages must lead to other pages. It goes on and on.

You have to wonder where the World Wide Web begins. Some people would say it began with the first Web page ever posted at CERN by Tim Berners-Lee, but did all subsequent Web pages come online from links on his page? Of course not!

The World Wide Web is an amazing concept. It just keeps on growing, almost like matter spontaneously bursting into existence across the universe! It may one day become larger than the Earth can hold, but will we still be around to know that?
