Writer Attacked after Refusing to Rebut Essay
If you have been sleeping under a rock, you may want to roll over and go back to sleep. But if you take notice of the Web and its many issues you may have stumbled across the classic debate between hardened J.R.R. Tolkien fans over the question of “do Balrogs have wings?” While this may not seem like an Earth-shattering issue, some people resort to poison pen campaigns, character assassination, and outright lying in order to win converts to their point of view.
The latest example of these tactics recently emerged when an essay struggling to prove that Balrog wings are metaphorical, written by someone publishing under the pseudonym Elenhir, was dismissed out of hand by renowned Tolkien scholar Michael Martinez. Martinez, a veteran of endless Balrog wing debates, had no wish to be drawn back into a topic which has for all intents and purposes been settled.
In fact it was Martinez himself who finally published the truth about Balrogs when he rebutted a weak attempt to declare Balrogs as wingless metaphors by Wayne Hammond (an equally respected Tolkien scholar). Martinez, whose reputation for detailed and meticulous citation has won him thousands of references across the Web, wrote a lengthy and critically successful review of the Balrog wings war.
Perhaps in an attempt to gain notoreity, Elenhir retaliated against Martinez’ dismissal of the new Balrog essay by launching a series of personal attacks against Martinez. Joined by David Gransby, an Australian who poses under the screen name of halfir, Elenhir has attacked Martinez in recent days in the hope of creating a hostile environment in a forum where Martinez is not permitted to respond and defend himself.
For his part, Martinez pointed out some of the lies posted by Gransby while asking people not to take sides in these flame wars. The fact that Elenhir’s inability to write a coherent argument explaining away Balrog wings as metaphor would normally merit no attention. But the attempt to launch a flame war in response to Martinez’ lack of concern strikes some as a dirty tactic that serves more to discredit Elenhir and halfir. Perhaps if they focused on real scholarship they would be taken more seriously.

Want a New TV Experience — Switch to FiOS
Finally, new tv options were available in our neighborhood so we just connected to Verizon’s new FIOS TV, which is fiber-optic based. The waiting list in my state is especially long, so while I signed up last month, it wasn’t installed until last week. At the present time, we were hooked up with FIOS internet, which provided 15MB downstream as well as upstream Ten dollars a month is all that the premium service costs. and I’ve been really satisfied.
Installation to connect my TV was a breeze because I currently had internet with Verizon FIOS. He was able to utilize the Coax splitter I already had in place, splitting the wire leading to the router. The coax cable laid outside, gets split as they enter your house, spread to all your rooms and in the process a downstream cable gets into the Coax connector of Verizon Internet Router. Although the router speaks TCP/IP over RJ-45 to the DVR, it can also hand out IP addresses over Coax to supply the house. (DVR or Digital Video Recorder device) that comes included along with your FIOS TV bundle.
This DVR has a storage capacity of 17 viewing hours in HD, or 60 in SD broadcast (standard definition, not HD) or any possible mixture of the two of them that you can dream up. It’s easy to set it so that each recording is “protected”, as can be done with most DVRs. (not deleted in an automatic manner) You may fix yourself in a queue with the last x recordings. It’s possible to choose just the latest programs, or every show, with reruns included.
The Fios Package is priced at $43 per month and you can choose among standard, HD, Standard DVR and HD DVR for your DVD options. We found that paying $60 for cable TV wasn’t a good enough value considering how little TV we watch. Premium channels cost the same as with cable, most likely since HBO and Showtime set their own costs, rather than the provider.
Overall, I can report that we’ve been thoroughly pleased! The quality of the picture is outstanding, the set-top box works well, and I believe that Verizon will keep updating the boxes with the newest software features and even more On-Demand Movies. With this being only the first time that my area has had access to FIOS TV, I believe they have made an auspicious launch. I feel that local cable does not compete with this service.
Find the Perfect Venue and Caterer
In the early 90’s it was seen that London had no exact approach of suggesting & rating Pan Asian restaurants. An idea was figured out to publish a food book which would be filled with the greatest London eateries including fusion restaurants plus a range of price tags. The eating guide would be in the shape of a portable pocket book which would make it painless to carry in and around with you.
What makes the food guides so particular & dissimilar from any other restaurant guide is the fact that the places to eat are enjoyed by ordinary people, not proficient food reviewers. After the success of the restaurant guide, later followed the accomplishment of the site, The rating based website itself will often tell you anything you need to know about pretty much each Russian restaurants in London, it’s straightforward to navigate around and has a sensational search area where you just have to put in the name of the Indian south restaurants & what area it is in and rating based website will find it for you.
The review website itself has three different sections in all, the English capital Restaurants, Great Britain eateries and Venues & Parties. the English capital & British Isles eateries are pretty self explanatory, spots and parties is a part that offers venue and service hire.
Parties & Events is all based on striving to make organising a party or an event as easy as possible. the restaurants have options to help you with everything along with suggestions on what they think will work well and added extras. The 1st sub bit is the venue finder, with this all you have to do is enter your city and the number of attendees that would suit you and the review website may bring up all the venues and clubs. There is also a services searcher so if you are looking for Manchester Caterers to cater your wedding then Hardens is currently able to make suggestions for you. Other options consist of entertainment, food & drink, live music & other essentials. If you’re looking for Caterers, check out Hardens.
Five Tips For Buying a Home Entertainment System
Five Tips When Buying a Home Entertainment System
Looking for a new home entertainment system? Here are five tips
for choosing the best model for your home environment.
1. Choose a system that can be expanded. Most of your music
collection may be on CDs, but with the growing popularity of DVD
audio you don’t want to be left behind. Even if you are only
interested in stereo sound make sure you buy a system that can
be adapted to new technologies. This includes video as well as
audio mediums. Buy a stereo system for now, but make sure it has
surround sound capabilities.
Also consider whether you want your home entertainment system
accessible in different parts of the house. An expandable system
allows you to place speaker systems and playback modules in
different rooms so that you can enjoy home entertainment
throughout the house.
2. Buy a system with enough power. This goes hand-in-hand with
the previous tip. Don’t buy a unit which has just enough power
for your current needs, but rather, think about how you will be
expand it in the future. Surround sound speaker systems require
more power than stereo, and satellite speakers systems installed
in other rooms also require extra power.
Dedicated power amps for different parts of your home
entertainment system can make a vast difference in the quality
of sound. For example, a subwoofer amp can take the load off the
rest of your system will providing massively deep bass sounds.
3. Choose a system that matches your entertainment preferences.
If you are mainly interested in DVD video a surround sound
speaker system can add amazing authenticity to your viewing
experience. On the other hand, if you mostly listen to classical
music, divide your budget so that you can get a good set of
stereo speakers. If you like rap or hip-hop you should choose
speakers designed for bass heavy music — a subwoofer is a
necessity.
4. Make it backwards compatible. Many people still have a
sizable collection of VHS tapes and vinyl records. Rather than
throwing out these valuable sources of entertainment, make sure
your new entertainment system can handle them.
5. Buy the best you can afford. It’s a waste of money to buy
inferior components for your home entertainment system. You will
quickly become dissatisfied with them and end up ditching them.
If you have a limited budget, divide it up wisely. Rather than
starting with a full-featured audio and video home entertainment
system, concentrate on a few components. As long as your system
is expandable, you can continue adding new features as your
budget allows.

At the Danny Gans Theater at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada audiences have an opportunity to be dazzled and amazed by Danny Gans, the “Entertainer of the Year”, as he becomes approximately 60 of the 300 celebrated individuals in his internationally acclaimed repertoire. The impersonator is so adept at speaking, singing and moving like his subjects that with your eyes closed, you will think you are listening to Johnny Mathis, Anita Baker, Neil Diamond, or Dean Martin. “The Man of Many Faces”, as he is called, has taken the art of impersonation to a stellar level.
The intriguing question is how did Danny Gans go from the Stratosphere to the Rio to a ten-year contract with his own fifteen million dollar theater at the Mirage? Pretty heady stuff for a man whose dream was to play third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers. As a boy growing up in California he and his father lived and breathed baseball. In fact, Danny was so athletically gifted, he received a draft order from the Kansas City Royals while he was still in high school. An injury prevented him from signing on, so he entered college. This time he turned down an offer from the Chicago White Sox.
Gans kept his focus and his dream came true; he was drafted by the Dodgers. It looked like his future was set until a freak accident derailed a lifetime of hard work. During his first season, Danny collided with another player whose shoe dug into his Achilles tendon, sending him to the hospital and ending his professional baseball career.
The story goes that the exceedingly depressed young baseball player was sharing a hospital room with a man who told him to trust God. God must have something better in store or he wouldn’t have thrown this life-altering monkey wrench into his life. Cliché as it sounds, this became a turning point in Danny’s life. Gans attributes his success as an entertainer to his faith.
During his lengthy two-year recovery, to cheer him up, Danny’s father took him to see Sammy Davis, Jr. perform in Las Vegas. The dye was cast. Sammy Davis, Jr. motivated Danny to develop the talent he had always taken for granted. He loved to entertain people and he had a natural aptitude for making them laugh. In his show he pays a touching tribute to Sammy Davis, Jr.
To reach his goal as an entertainer Danny spent 15 years on the road honing his craft, performing in clubs and becoming one of the most highly paid and sought after performers in corporate entertainment. In 1995 he took his one-man show to Broadway, and it was so well received, the Neiderlanders offered him a one-year extension. Once again, he weighed his options. His family took precedence over life on the road. Las Vegas became home for Gans, wife Julie and their three young children, Amy, Andrew and Emily.
Enter Steve Wynn, savvy businessman and visionary of epic proportions. Wynn reasoned that Siegfried and Roy had made the Mirage an entertainment destination, and that the talented Gans would add a double whammy. Once again, Wynn gambled and won. He signed Danny to a ten-year contract with his own theater. The 1,260 seat custom-built theater is warm and luxurious with deep wine reds and rich dark wood panels. The seven-piece band plays and the audience is primed for the star.
Gans makes an energetic entrance wearing black pants, a black turtleneck and a well-cut black sport jacket. Creating an immediate bond with the audience, using minimal props, his talent is obvious. It is easy to understand why he has been named “Singer of the Year”, “Comedian of the Year”, “Entertainer of the Year”, “Show of the Year”, and most recently, “Showman of the Year”.
As he transitions through Smokey Robinson, Joe Cocker, Blood, Sweat and Tears, the Temptations, James Brown, and Ray Charles, one feels that he is a genuinely happy man. Gans effuses warmth and a passion for his craft. His gestures and dance moves are as accurate as his vocals. His George Burns is funny, and touching. Boomers and their parents could be seen with a nostalgic tear in their eyes. One of the highlights was a duet between Jimmy Stewart and Kermit the Frog. He captured Rod Stewart’s throaty Scotch voice on ‘Have I Told you Lately That I Love You?’, and Bruce Springsteen’s Philly bravado on ‘Glory Days’. There was comedy with Bill Clinton and redneck jokes with Jeff Foxworthy. Using a wig and his profile he captured both Nat King Cole and daughter Natalie Cole. He received a standing ovation for his impression of Savage Garden.

Wedding Music - Top Tips On Booking Wedding Musicians
How many musicians do I need?
The size of the wedding party is the key to this question.
A duo with discreet amplification can happily entertain a
group of up to 60-70 people. A trio can cope with up to 100
people. As the party size increases, so does the size of the
venue. You need more happening on stage to catch the attention
and get the party going. A four or five-piece band with a small
PA system is generally required if the party is 100 or more.
To entertain 200 people and beyond, the quality of the PA
system and the lighting for the stage and dance-floor becomes
crucial to the success of the event. An act is required that is
able to present a “stage show” that not only sounds good but
also looks good, in terms of movement and costume, with the
ability to catch the attention of the crowd … even those at
the back of a big hall!
How do I find the right band?
The quality of musicianship is the most important factor.
Listen to recordings of the band performing live, where
available.
Repertoire and experience come next. How long has the band been
involved in wedding entertainment? Can you talk to a “satisfied
customer” … a couple who used the band for their wedding and
were, hopefully, delighted with the result?
If it’s possible, watch the band perform live. However, if your
wedding is in the UK, do be aware that recently revised
licensing laws have made it very difficult and expensive to
present live music in a public place, so public performances by
bands of the quality you require for a successful wedding are a
rarity.
How will the performance be organised?
You can expect approximately 3×45 minute sets of live music in
a four hour period … or 2×1 hour sets, if it suits you better.
If the musicians are carrying a PA system, they will probably
come equipped with a CD player and will be able to play CDs of a
similar style of music for half an hour before the first set and
in the breaks between the sets, giving professional-quality
background music when the band is offstage.
For peace of mind, organise your music through a reputable
agency. Make sure you receive, sign and return a contract
stipulating when the band will arrive, when the performance will
take place and the agreed amount of remuneration. You should
expect to be able to talk to the bandleader a few weeks before
the wedding to discuss any specific preferences you require.
That first dance is something really special. If you approach
the band well before the event, the guys will usually be
prepared to learn your chosen song, if it’s not already in their
repertoire.
How much should I expect to pay?
Reliability and quality of performance are the two attributes
that are essential for headache-free, successful music at a
wedding. If you go for cheap, you are likely to sacrifice either
or both of the above!
In the UK, a professional musician will expect to take home
£100 - 150 for an engagement. On top of that there are equipment
and travel costs, along with publicity, advertising and agency
costs.
As a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay £200 - 250 for a solo
performance, £300 - 400 for a duo, £450 - 625 for a trio. A
four-piece band starts at approximately £800. Depending on the
versatility of the musicians, the quality of equipment (PA
system … possibly backlighting for the stage and for the
dance-floor), the price increases to £1000 - 1500. Larger bands
cost proportionately more. To see the variety and versatility of
the wedding bands available in the British Isles, take a look at

Z of Wedding Bands in the UK.
