What Is VOIP?

Filed under: Cell Phones — admin @ 6:17 am

Confused about VOIP? Join the crowd. It’s not as difficult as it sounds and we are going to make VOIP simple for the average person.

VOIP simply means Voice Over Internet Protocol. Now you don’t need to know anything about the protocol so basically it is using the Internet to make phone calls.

All you need is a high speed internet connection to make a VOIP call. There are many companies that offer VOIP service and offer the telephone with it. Many will even set it up for you. Even local cable companies are offering to set you up. Once it is set up, you don’t need to worry about anything. You can simply make telephone calls just like normal. Now you will be making calls through an internet company and not your phone company.

Why should I use VOIP and are there any disadvantages?

Advantages

The main reason most will want to use it is to lower their phone bills. You will normally pay a flat fee and you will get long distance to the US and Canada with it at no extra charge.

You can keep you phone number that you have now.

No matter where you move you can take your phone number with you even if you move to a different area code. My daughter moved to Bermuda and she kept her home phone number.

When you move and your phone moves with you there are no extra setup charges as there is with your local phone

If you are travelling you can set it up to use your laptop or wireless connection, as long as it is high speed. Most hotels these days accomodate this.

No longer will you have to pay for extra features. With VOIP service providers these usually come as standard. Features such as:

1. Caller ID

2. Call Waiting

3. Call Transfer

4. Repeat Dialling

5. Return Call

6. Three-Way Dialling

Advanced call filtering features. These features allow you to decide how calls to a specific number are handled by using caller ID information. They allow you to:

1. Forward the call to a particular number

2. Send the call directly to voicemail

3. Give the caller a busy signal

4. Play a “not-in-service” message

Disadvantages

Sometimes the quality is not as good as phone lines. It’s close and will continue to get better. I suspect that within a year you will not be able to tell the difference.

Set up can be very challenging. If you are not a techie, there is always someone you can hire to do it for you. With the financial savings you will get from it, it’s worth it to pay someone if you are at all squimish about it.

It does not work well with fax machines and alarm systems. It works and in short time this will also improve.

If your internet access goes down then your phone will also go down. For most with high speed access this rarely happens.

If the power goes off the phone will not work. For most of us, this is also a rare occurrance. You can get backup batteries to resolve this issue if you are in a rural area and it happens often.

Currently the government does not apply taxes to the service. If that changes VOIP may not be price effective anymore.

VOIP is the future and more and more people are coming online with it every day. This may also effect a lowering of the cost in time.

That is it in a nutshell. It’s not nearly as scary as you thought.

TalkTalk Rejects uSwitch Survey Findings

Filed under: Buyers + Consumers, Cell Phones, Technometer — admin @ 10:28 am

A recent survey by uSwitch showed up some serious flaws in the technical support offered by broadband operators in the UK. Top providers like Orange and Tiscali were found to have many dissatisfied customers, according to the report.

The uSwitch report showed that only 55% customers are happy with their provider’s tech support. Orange and Tiscali rate very poorly as far as these factors are concerned. While network connection problems are the most frequent issues that crop up, only about 40% of these are resolved in one go. More than half the issues need more than one call before they are fully sorted out.

TalkTalk customers were shown to be the hardest hit, with an average wait of 12 minutes before they are put through to technical support executives. Nearly 2000 calls are made for technical support in each hour in the UK, the survey revealed. Millions of pounds are spent each year on such calls. On an average, a technical support call lasts 17 minutes, out of which 6 minutes are spent on hold, the report claimed.

TalkTalk, the British ISP, has rejected the findings of this report entirely. They have come up with statistics gleaned form actual calls to show that on an average, a TalkTalk customer spends just 53 seconds on hold during a tech assistance call. They remarked that the uSwitch survey has derived its conclusions based on obsolete data. As a result, its findings are in no way relevant to today’s scenario - click for latest broadband reviews.

The ISP further pointed out that the survey had asked people to give their average time on hold, and that there were no specifics asked for or collected. Any conclusions based on such generalised data cannot be scientific, the ISP claimed.

New Outlets for Broadband Service Showcased in Las Vegas

Filed under: Cell Phones — admin @ 10:44 am

Get ready for new broadband service coming to an outlet near you. Take a second to imagine how your phone experience can be enhanced by what’s just around the corner in wireless broadband. At the CTIA convention in Las Vegas, Motorola demonstrated a new broadband service that will include HD video blogging, as well as streaming HD, online video gaming with super-graphics and other bandwidth-intensive applications. There are already augmented and virtual reality applications being developed using cell phones to get you into the action and help you create a new world around you.

Broadband service is becoming all about data and how much capacity the next generations of the service will hold. There are projections that data usage will double every year or two through the middle of the next decade. It will allow for the use of phones as PCs, allowing you to get more from your mobile carriers than you ever imagined. In Asia, video is already being streamed to handsets at 30 frames per second to give clear film and video experiences. The future holds the prospects of supercomputers at your fingertips, in phone-like devices that let you share your life and your media in real time.

The digital video recorder has already changed the way TV shows are watched, the way advertisers view the medium and the way they are reviewing their use of the web. But the TV digital video recorder is only a first step for that technology. The future will marry that technology with your PC and phone, with each new device getting closer to putting all the power of your television, your computer and your phone together in your hand, no matter where you are.

Does VoIP Have the Power to Reshape the Telecoms Industry?

Filed under: Cell Phones, Technometer — admin @ 2:34 pm

One of the biggest developments in the VoIP industry in recent times has been the availability of mobile VoIP technology. Although still relatively early days for the mobile Voice over IP start-ups such as Truphone, it certainly seems they have the capacity to reshape the industry quite dramatically. Some of the recent incumbent mobile operators’ actions seem testament to this fact with T-Mobile recently being forced to allow the use of Truphone over its network, having previously barred calls to Truphone allocated numbers.

While a few people suggest that as VoIP prices tend towards zero, this is making it a very hard industry to make any sizable profit in; the increasing prevalence of low cost high speed broadband and has resulted in a huge increase in the availability of free Wi-Fi. Consequently this is making mobile VoIP operators an increasingly attractive offer for consumers. The trend in the availability of new ’smart phones’ with the ability to run mobile VoIP client software, at ever reducing prices is also, it could be argued, creating a tipping point in the industry.

We have recently seen T-Mobile announce their Voice over IP service called @home giving people the option of paying one low monthly flat rate. However whilst the industry is finding customers uncomfortable about getting rid of their fixed phone line completely, mobile VoIP operators have no such issue to contend with. The seamless integration of mobile VoIP clients into the functionality of mobile phones, as well as the falling cost of unlimited data phone packages has resulted in a predictably rapid growth in the mobile VoIP industry.

Currently it has been documented that there are 4 million VoIP subscribers in the UK, and this looks set to increase steadily. How established mobile phone operators will harness this is still unclear but the decision to force T Mobile to allow calls to Truphone subscribers surely gives a crystal clear sign that rather than try and resist the mobile VoIP operators, the entranched industry monoliths must find a way of working with them.

One stumbling block which could have an impact on the take-up of mobile Voice over IP is security, with many highly publicized stories highlighting the vulnerabilities in making calls using VoIP. Another problem to contend with is ‘VoIP phishing’ where people are convinced to part with their personal data voluntarily after taking the ‘bait’ from a thief. This is also symptomatic of other VoIP security issues where unscrupulous would be thieves can tamper with the caller ID making it appear as though they are ringing from popular financial institutions. Once such issues have been dealt with and fears allayed it is likely that mobile VoIP will become will become much more integral to peoples lives as people take the opportunity to turn their mobiles into VoIP phones.

How to get a Mobile Phone Deal with Free Line Rental for 12 Months

Filed under: Cell Phones — admin @ 11:27 pm

Most consumers have little understanding of free line rental bargains because of the fact that they are a pretty recent trend. Free line rental deals are still the secret bargain of all the deals being sold.

By far the best priced way to buy a free line rental phone contract is over the web. As free line rental deals are something of an obscure product you would be well advised to find a comprehensive a site comparing mobile phone deals to see the best priced deals at the time.

A free line rental package is a type of cashback package. With a free line rental cell phone contract you pay the phone bill just like normal for the first months until the time comes to claim your your 100% cash back. Then you need to remember to clam your money of the mobile cell phone back from the vendor which first sold you the mobile cell phone.

In principle a 12 month free line rental deal will not cost a dime to own. This is based on the assumption thatthat the consumer is thorough in making a request for for 100% cashback by redemption. This may not nearly as simple as customers are told because of the fact that mobile retailers build in sneaky pitfalls within the terms and conditions of free line rental deals so they can limit the numbers of successful consumers.

A serious pitfall of free line rental offers is the fact that if the retailer go out of business you have now way to redeem your cash. 12 month free line rental is unnavoidably going to be a compromise, as it is usually only offered with older types of cell phone.

In spite of the complications of free line rental products they remain genuine and shoppers can still obtain one hundred percent free phone for full duration of a 12 month contract.
