The blog has certainly come a long way. A few years ago, an active, popular blog would contain some great writing along with a few interesting pictures and graphics. Today, that just doesn’t cut it anymore! Thanks to a number of new innovations, bloggers can now post a number of interesting gadgets, ranging from widgets to audio files. One of the most exciting things you can post is music videos!
Music videos are a great addition to any blog - after all, everyone likes to hear a great tune! In order to host a video clip, you will need to add plugins to your blog. Some plugins are designed to work with self-hosted files while others are compatible with off-site hosted ones. Some can be used with both kinds of files. The majority of these plugins are free to use - so which one is the best? That greatly depends on what kind of end result you want. The truth is that these plugins can be as complicated or as simple as you want them to be.
It’s important to note that plugins are among the most dynamic tools on the internet today - this means that what was here yesterday could well be outdated in a few weeks! Always remember to test out your plugins first to make sure you find the one that suits you best. It’s also a good idea to keep back-ups of all your music video files - in case something does happen to the plugin, at least you won’t lose your video.
The process of adding music videos to your sidebar or anywhere on your blog is pretty simple, especially with regard to YouTube videos. Let’s say that you’ve watched a clip that you really like and would like to feature it on your blog. On the right-hand side of the video, you’ll notice a space that says Embed and some URL code underneath it - you will need to copy this. If you can’t find this, it means that the person who has posted the clip does not want to share this video outside of YouTube. A number of plugins, like Vipers Video Quicktags will allow you to embed videos from other sites as well like Google, Metacafe, MySpace and IFILM.
While putting music videos on your blog is definitely something to try, be careful about how you do it. For instance, don’t spam your blog with too many clips - while readers certainly don’t mind clicking a clip or two, seeing nothing but an endless line of clips can put people off.

If you’re a fan of New Age piano, no doubt you’ve listened to some of George Winston’s music. What I find fascinating about his songs is how he creates them. Most improvisers/composers start with the melody, usually because it’s the easiest way to begin.
What George does is start with the background. He creates an aural canvas over which he improvises the melody. This is an excellent way to create with because once you have the chord changes for the first 8-bars or so, you’ve pretty much finished a section of music.
Now after Winston gets his (A) section, it’s another textural background that will usually make its appearance for the (B) section. The beautiful thing about this method is that it really frees up the right-hand! Once your left hand is playing the background, you are able to create melody easily. It’s like a lead guitar player creating a solo while the band lays down the rhythm and chord changes. In fact, George Winston has referred to his left hand as the rhythm section.
Creating the background first is just another way to compose/improvise. There is absolutely nothing wrong with going with the melody first if that is what inspires you. However, it’s good to know how others are creating so you can learn from them.

Piano playing doesn’t have to be boring. There’s no law that says you have to play a song the same way everyone else plays it. By learning some basic music theory and chord formations, you can have the time of your life playing music like you’ve always wanted to.
Every musician has a different method of arranging. Some start with the bass, some start with the melody, some just arrange everything all at once. You’ll eventually discover the process that works best for you, but here’s a basic guideline list to get you started.
- Play the song as written. Pay careful attention to the melody and harmonies so you understand how the song is supposed to sound before altering it. Make sure you can play the song very well before moving on to an arrangement.
- Analyze the song’s chord structure and form. Know all the chord changes and any key changes. Separate the piece into parts using the letter system discussed in this course; often, you’ll be able to add some spice to an arrangement by simply knowing where a verse switches into a chorus.
- Look at the song’s context to determine the appropriate sort of arrangement. For instance, if you’re working on a classical lullaby or wedding song, you probably won’t want to add western bass or a march beat. Of course, there’s no rule saying you can’t do that if you’re going for a comical effect. Just be aware of the effect every sort of arrangement technique will have on a song.
- Change the bass chording pattern based on the just-analyzed song’s context. Working with “Git Alone Little Dogies”? Try a western bass. A classical romantic song? Give upward inversions or arpeggios a go. Just keep switching the bass pattern until you find something you like. After awhile, you’ll acquire the ability to naturally know what to do. Until then, try it all.
- Add fillers to the melody. Again, be aware of what’s appropriate. If you’re playing a western bass, try grace notes and twangs. If the song is in Alberti bass, add some glissandos or delicate octave harmonies. Remember that certain fillers, like runs or straddle-downs, work best when you’re holding a half note or higher in the melody.
- Add dynamic variation. This is where the form analysis comes in handy. If you know a key or part change is coming up, consider the ways in which you can take the dynamic up or down to create a textured, interesting effect. Try not to make the whole song extremely loud or extremely soft. Remember, variety is the spice of life!
The piano arrangement you create is bound only by the limits of your imagination. Try everything and don’t get discouraged — you’ll get the hang of it eventually. Now pick a song and get to it!
