Hairspray is the story of a merry kid named Tracy Turnblad, a would-be dancer who wants to earn a place on a neighbouring TV programme named the Corny Collins Show. The programme is essentially based on a Baltimore-based series named the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.
Tracy is nameless in the dancing world when she auditions, in spite of this she is elected for one of the dancing positions and against exceptionally long odds she becomes a dancing superstar virtually overnight. Tracy is overjoyed with this brand new fame, & she comes to the decision to make use of her reputation to make positive changes to the television show. The key reason for these positive improvements is to do with race. Tracy aims to racially unite the television program, & as one might well imagine, Tracy is faced with significant resistance.
Hairspray transferred to the West End in London in two-thousand and seven, opening for first previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October 11, before being opened to the general public at its official opening on October thirtieth, two thousand and seven. The musical production has included some huge name actors — Michael Ball plays the character of Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s mother, delivering a compelling performance in this challenging female position, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop property-owner Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the London West End features newcomer to the stage, Leanne Jones, in the main character of Tracy.
Hairspray the musical play has gained scores of upbeat comments from journalists and musical theatre fans alike. Jacqueline said: “I have been to see the play 4 times up to now & I am going back again next week and a few more times after that as well. I love the theatre show and wish they could stay on a great deal longer. Ben Ellis is fabulous as link and Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all incredible. The production of hairspray is by far my favourite, its bubbly & if you are feeling a little gloomy then it is guaranteed to make you feel a whole lot happier. I give it a 10 out of 10 - I love it well done to everyone involved. Find London Theatre Tickets offers with great savings on all top West End musical.
