Thousands of Hits on Your Website Mean Nothing

Filed under: Biz Stuff — admin @ 11:37 pm

You’ve built your website, you’ve done great search engine optimisation, great offline marketing, your products are ready, you’re ready, bring em on.

You look at your web statistics and they are way better than you thought they would be. You are getting thousands of hits (hits by the way really aren’t what you should be looking at, they really are not much use to you except when bragging to people who don’t understand what you are talking about) and visitors every day. That’s fantastic right?

Well maybe not. When it comes to internet marketing that age old adage applies just as much if not more. “Quality not Quantity “. Look a little deeper at your stats. If 90% of your visitors are arriving and leaving within 30 seconds or even 1 minute, well then that’s not much use to you is it? They aren’t going to buy anything.

“But it said that 60% of them bookmarked my site, so they’ll be back.”

Great ! have you looked at your favourites lately, I don’t know about you but I can’t even find my real favourites among them, in fact I’m even afraid to look at my favourites folder.

“But I’ve got a really catchy/short/easy to remember domain name they’ll remember that won’t they?.”

Look over there, Isn’t that your competitor with their really catchy/short/easy to remember domain name.

So what do you do?

It’s actually quite simple. You Add Value to their visit. Yes you make your site a Value Added Website. In other words you GIVE them something, something that will bring them back to you, that will help them remember you as being a useful site, an interesting site. It doesn’t have to be something you physically give them. Information is one of the most valuable commodities and if you can find the information that your customers want then give it to them ! I’m not going to tell you what that information is, you know who your customer is right? (you should and if you don’t you better find out). So it shouldn’t take you too long to work out what they might be interested in. If your website is competing heavily with offline marketers which in particular a lot of online clothing and gift retailers are, then this is even more important. Don’t compete on price alone. Statistics have shown that a customer must have contact with you on average 7 times before they buy. You need to get those other 6 connections in.

Do a little bit of research on areas related to your products. Top 5/10’s are great. Find the top 10 ….whatever ! something that will be relevant to YOUR customer. There is plenty of FREE information on the internet that you can use, loads of articles that as long as you keep the authors link in you can generally use.

If possible you should capture your visitors. When you do capture them, look after them, nurture them, communicate with them and send them information via email. You can set this up very easily by using an autoresponder. But don’t bombard them with useless information, with 10 emails a day, do you think that is going to endear them to you? But DO communicate and give them the option each time of stopping the communication if they want to. Always have an unsubscribe button at the end of your emails and make sure your emails are always double opt-in. (In otherwords they have to confirm their subscription somebody else can’t just sign them up.)

So how do you capture them? Well that could be a whole new article and it probably will be. Unfortunately nowadays you can’t just put something like “sign up here for our free newsletter” it doesn’t work anymore, there are just too many of them. It comes back to adding value, what I have just been talking about, giving them something useful.

Turn your website into a Value Added Website and watch your business grow.

Web Copy - How Much is Enough?

Filed under: Biz Stuff — admin @ 5:54 pm

These days, there’s widespread acceptance that a website is an integral part of the marketing plan of any business. Likewise, it’s commonly accepted that web copy is a vital component of any website. But how much web copy is enough?

The pure volume of information available on the Internet is daunting - often counterproductive. There are approximately 550 billion documents on the web, and every day another 7 million are added. According to an A.T. Kearney, Network Publishing study (April 2001), workers take so long trying to find information that it costs organizations $750 billion annually!

Yet people continue to use it. Information gathering is the most common use of the Internet (American Express survey, 2000). And it seems work-related searches are amongst the most common, with 48% of people using the Internet to find work-related information, as opposed to 7% who use magazines (Lyra Research, 2001).

Interestingly, however, the average person visits no more than 19 websites in the entire month in order to avoid information overload (Nielsen NetRatings in Jan 2001).

So how do you ensure your site is one of those 19? How do you make your content helpful without making it overwhelming? That’s what this article is about…

I’ve written several articles on WHAT to write on your website in order to make it helpful. (See http://www.divinewrite.com/benefits.htm, http://www.divinewrite.com/webbenefitwriting.htm, and http://www.divinewrite.com/webwriting.htm.) But that’s only half the battle… Businesses also need to know HOW MUCH to write. Here are 5 quick rules of thumb to help you decide how much is enough.

1) Know your audience (Reader or Search Engine?)

Think about whether you’re targeting human readers (potential customers) or search engines. This must always be one of your very first questions, as the answer will determine your approach to content.

In general, human readers think less is more. Search engines, on the other hand, think more is more (well, more or less…). In many ways, it comes down to a question of quality versus quantity. Human readers are interested in quality, whereas search engines are interested quantity. Human readers want you to answer their questions and make it clear how you can benefit them. And they don’t want to wade through volumes of text. Search engines want a high word count, full of relevant keywords, and short on diagrams. (See http://www.divinewrite.com/seocopy.htm for more information on writing for search engines. See http://www.divinewrite.com/SEOCEO.htm for an introductory article on search engine optimization.)

You need to think carefully about your audience. In most cases, it’ll be a trade-off. A high search engine ranking is important (or at least beneficial) to most businesses, so a happy medium is required. The following tips will go some way toward providing this balance.

2) Make it concise

Say everything you need to say, but always ask, “Can I say it with fewer words?” The literary world may be impressed by complex writing, but visitors aren’t. Keep it simple, and keep it brief. Your home page shouldn’t be more than 1 screen long. In other words, visitors shouldn’t have to scroll. Subsequent pages can be longer, but try to keep them to a maximum of about 300-400 words each (approximately 1 scroll). A lot of people will tell you that you also need 300-400 words or more on your home page for a good search engine ranking. You don’t. If you focus on the right keywords and generate a lot of links to your site, you can achieve a high ranking without losing your readers’ interest by padding

TIP: For most businesses, a good rule of thumb is to make it conversational. Old school writers and would-be writers oppose conversational copy; don’t listen to them. Unless you’re writing for an old-school audience, feel free to write as people talk.

3) One subject per page

On this, both readers and search engines agree. Don’t try and squeeze too much information onto a single page. For example, instead of trying to detail all of your products on a single Products page, use the page to introduce and summarize your product suite, then link to a separate page per product. This way, your content will be easier to write, your readers won’t be overwhelmed, and you’ll be able to focus on fewer keywords (so the search engines will get a clearer picture of what you do).

4) Make it scannable

According to a 1998 Sun Microsystems study, reading from a monitor is 25% slower than reading from paper. As a result, 79% of users scan read when online. So make sure you accommodate scanning. Use headings and sub-headings. Highlight important words and sections. Use bulleted lists and numbered lists. Use tables. Use statistics. Use meaningful indenting. Use short sentences. Most importantly, be consistent in your usage. Oh… and follow rules 2 and 3 above.

5) Use a simple menu structure

Try to keep your high-level menu (Home, About Us, Contacts, Products, Services, etc.) to a maximum of about 10 items (5-8 is ideal). If you have too many options, your site will seem unstructured and your visitors won’t know where to start. In order for a visitor to want to come back to your site, they need to feel comfortable when they’re there. They need to know what to expect. If they can’t identify any logic in your menu structure, they will always feel lost. What’s more, this lack of structure will reflect badly on your business.

The Internet can be an incredibly cost-effective form of promotion because the cost per word to publish is so low. Don’t be fooled into thinking more is more just because it costs less. Audiences - even search engines - don’t want everything; they just want enough.

Happy writing!

The Property Index - the Terrific International Real Estate Hub

Filed under: Investing In Markets, Real Estate Resources — admin @ 5:47 am

If you are looking to buy property abroad try Property Index, specialists in overseas property.

Although Property Index is generally viewed as a fairly young house, doing business only since March 2007, they have quick achieved expert status. De facto, they are a fairly trouble-free house focusing entirely on counseling every visitor who is determined to sell, buy etc. assets anywhere in the world. Their promise: to offer you assistance to unearth exactly what’s required quickly plus, obviously, without hassle. Real estate is up for grabs wherever you want at present, undoubtedly the choicest area being property available for sale in Spain. It’s easy as pie to write up the terrific properties on the market in Spain, one explanation for wanting property here being a combination of the houses and apartments you can purchase and the opportunity of spending your life with such a energetic populace.

It’s one of the truly popular countries at present, and in view of the overall attractiveness and the wonderful weather surrounding you here, how could you conceivably say no… Real estate in Spain is immersed in culture, art and history, this realm of the world has a long tradition as a home to a good number of indigenous civilizations. About thirty years back you’d find a mere trickle of Britons in search of properties in Spain. Ask any one single person who has relocated to Spain and they’ll tell you the same thing. Some people would tend to view it as a temporary rage and others tend to view it as a that’s nearly an obsession… People intent on transferring to this region will typically range from young urban professionals keen on a life perspective to elderly people looking to relax.

Note, though, that you might hit on some situations when buying properties overseas: there are dozens of steps to come to terms with when brainstorming, touring or buying. If you miss out on but a single step this is certain to bring about large situations not to forget, preeminently, loss in financial terms. Naturally, as can be assumed with this popular region, properties may be incredibly expensive in this place which is basically due to the increasing demand. However, the property buyer is definitely rather spoiled in a destination characterized by wonderful land and smiling scenery. It really has the whole thing anyone might covet, and then some.

How Much Is Your Popcorn Worth?: Powerful Lessons In Marketing & The Psychology Of Selling - The Fin

Filed under: Biz Stuff — admin @ 9:35 am

Additional Lessons from Popcorn Marketing

I’m assuming that the movie theatres have tested their price point and figured out what the highest price is that they can charge and get away with - the highest price the market will be willing to pay.

And, that’s what they charge for their popcorn.

I believe that’s a mistake. Here’s a better way of doing it:

Test your price point. Find out what the highest price is that the customer is willing to pay for your product. Then, bring the price down considerably! Offer a ‘better’ deal than your competitors. Or offer them a lot more value than others, by adding additional bonuses to increase the overall perceived value.

Sure, you can take advantage of your customers by charging as much as you possibly can. But, I wouldn’t recommend that strategy. Instead, tell them what others are charging and what a great value you’re giving them. Break it down for them and explain the difference. Show them how they’re unique and why buying from you is in their best interest.

Remember, you can either corner them into buying from you, or you can just make your offer so much better, and so much more irresistible, that they will want to buy from you!

Moreover, I want the customer to feel good ‘after’ the purchase as well. I’m not a fan of buyer’s remorse, and I assume my customers aren’t either.

You ensure that they will continue to feel good about their buying decision after the purchase by delivering on your promise. In fact, you can go a step beyond and ‘over-deliver.’

When you do that, you will also:

1) Dramatically decrease your refund rate, and

2) Ensure that the customer will buy from you again, in the future, because his first purchase from you was a positive and rewarding experience.

And, besides, the only reason I’m “in business” is because of the ‘customer.’ Why would I want to cheat him or trick him? We’re in this business because we want to help people and create real value in their lives. Not because we want to suck every penny out of them, right?

Most marketers are bad marketers because they think that marketing is about ‘tricking’ people into giving them money. That’s absolutely not true.

If you do it right, they will want to give you the money, and feel good about it. And, you’ll be able to sleep well at night.

Marketing is not a one-shot deal. If you try to trick the customer into giving you as much money as possible just so you can get one sale out of him, you’re seriously missing out.

Instead, if you make the first buying experience a pleasant one, the customer will continue to buy from you again and again, and will happily give you more money. So, don’t forget about your existing customers after they’ve made that first sale. That’s just the beginning of your mutually-beneficial relationship with him.

Well, there you have it… “popcorn marketing” explained, and then some! :-)

There are many extremely powerful marketing strategies and psychological motivators at work in the above ‘movie popcorn’ scenario.

Remember, just ‘knowing’ about these strategies and concepts won’t do much to increase your profits. Start applying as many of them to your own business as possible, and I guarantee you’ll sell more, and sell more often.

In fact, you’ll get much better results than the movie theatres ever will, by always keeping the customer’s best interest in mind.

Here’s to your dramatic increase in profits!

Sincerely,

Ian Canaway

Small Business Newsletter Dilemma: Which Day Do I Send?

Filed under: Biz Stuff — admin @ 9:18 am

If you’re just ramping up your small business email newsletter, you might be wondering what day you should send it to your opt-in list. After all, you want it to get opened and read and you know your prospects may be weeding through a ton of email clutter. What to do?

There is no magic bullet to figure out the science behind when your small business prospects will open your email. But you can help yourself along by doing some up front legwork. And the answer is right in front of you.

Don’t do what I see so many other small business owners do. They ask their friends and colleagues what day is best and then move forward on that advice. Bzzzzzzzt — wrong answer. Unless those friends and colleagues fit your target market, you will be wasting a lot of time with this approach.

One of the best ways to determine the day to send your newsletters is to think about the details of your target market. Do you get emails from them on a regular basis? What time of day are their emails written? What day of the week? Do you feel comfortable asking your current subscribers? By assessing the habits of your market, you can figure the best day and time to send.

Test it out though. The decision is yours and it’s not cast in concrete. That’s the beauty of owning your own business. It’s in your control.

How to Find Very Cheap Car Insurance

Filed under: School of Insurance — admin @ 12:42 am

No one wants to pay for more than what they’re actually getting, and no one wants to pay for services they don’t need. The same is true whether you’re purchasing telephone services or car insurance. If you’re looking for very cheap car insurance (and who isn’t?), take these tips into consideration.

1. It’s easier to find very cheap car insurance during a soft market, also called the buyer’s market, rather than a hard market, also called the seller’s market. During a soft market, rates are low, companies are competitive, and you can find coverage on more areas.

2. Find out whether or not your other insurance providers offer car insurance as well. For example, you may call your home owner insurance provider and discover that they offer car insurance, too. If so, ask for a quote and any discounts or deals they might have. Or, you may find a car insurance provider that also offers home insurance and discounts for switching to them for your multiple insurance needs.

3. If you already have car insurance, make a point to look critically at your policy and ask questions before you renew rather than just pay. You might find that you can make variations to lower insurance costs.

4. Also, if you already have car insurance, consider changing your deductible amount. People with good driving records and who are willing to pay higher deductibles in the event of an insurance claim can lower their insurance costs.

5. Ask about multi-family and multi-policy discounts. Some insurance providers offer discounts if you insure more than one vehicle.

Understand that other factors such as the type of car you drive, years of driving experience, geographic location, your credit history, driving record, occupation, and marital status can affect your car insurance costs. Some of these factors can be changed; some can not. Yet, those that negatively affect your insurance costs can be avoided in the future.

Driver Penalty Points System to Step Up a Gear in Ireland

Filed under: Road Trippers — admin @ 7:56 pm

Recently the Irish Minister for Transport Martin Cullen TD announced the introduction of a further 30 offences to the existing 4(!) Penalty Points that have been hidden away gathering dust for the last three years. Motorists are seemingly unaware of the tsunami about to be unleashed!

On the first of April 2006, (an appropriate date!), these additional offences will become live and Irish Motorists need to be alert and aware especially since there has also been promised a much greater Garda (Police) presence on the side of the road or in the middle, as the case may be (you know the annual ritual of hauling in speeding drivers to line the coffers!)

One of the omissions during the announcement, much to the dismay of sensible Motorists and indeed The Driving Tuition Profession and Road Safety Groups, was the absence of any Mobile or Cell Phone clause.

The continued use of Mobile phones while driving, especially amongst the Younger and Learner Driver sector is a cause for alarm. Most drivers accept that this is a dangerous hobby yet still it appears to be outweighing the other favourite participant sports in Ireland such as Golf and a visit to the local Pub, not to mention those thousands of Anglers who line the Banks every weekend!

Hell it’s difficult enough for an experienced Driver to deal adequately and safely with all the situations that he or she comes across during a driving trip without being distracted by cell phone use. For Learner and Inexperienced Drivers cell phone use while driving is not only insane but a great danger to all other road users.

Mature (!) Drivers are not setting a good example in this arena by constantly exhibiting one-handed techniques while cornering in their daily motoring journeys.

We see cell phone use many times a day in our quest to teach basic survival skills on the road to a new generation and clearly the longer you get away with a dangerous (and stupid!) habit, the closer you are getting to that day when all hell breaks loose and your conversation about last nights’ party, meeting, or the next door neighbours cat, will turn in to an Expensive Nightmare for both you and the other third party (!)

Several days after the above mentioned announcements, we were invited to participate in a Live Radio Broadcast from Limerick 95FM our local number one radio station. The Morning Show under the guidance of Ed Myers always provides a good forum on Motoring Matters and we are grateful to be able to put our point of view across.

Thankfully, during the debate no mention was made of the Real cause of all our Motoring and Driving Test problems, which as we all know rests entirely with the Driving Tuition Profession which as this article goes to press is still unregulated four years after the law was scheduled to be rolled out!

The incredible growth of the Irish Economy over the last ten years has benefited the whole community as well as sending highly qualified graduates to all corners of the Globe to spread the news that Ireland is no longer a banana republic but a force to be reckoned with!

Unfortunately with this exponential growth has come a virtual tidal wave of additional vehicles, piloted mostly by learner drivers who are still not getting the message that a moving vehicle at high speed is a bit like an ICBM(remember those?).In other words when it comes to a sudden stop there is not much of anything left!

It’s the same old story…when enough people have been killed, and families devastated, eventually the Government have to stop talking and take some really serious action.

Hopefully this will be soon. Watch this space…

Robin Piggott is a Professional Driving Instructor based in Limerick, Ireland. His Web site and Blogs continue to highlight the devastatingly inadequate laws in the Driving and Learner Driver Arena.
